If you are considering family photography in Hertfordshire, Newborn Love also offers non-studio photography.

Location shoots are a popular option for families with little ones. Sometimes in a studio, little ones can feel uneasy or pressured. Outdoors, they can run, giggle and play hide and seek. Basically they can do all the things kids love to do. This makes for relaxed, informal photographs that show the true personality of your child. No forced or cheesy smiles 🙂

Best locations for family photography in Hertfordshire

We are lucky in Hertfordshire as there are so many lovely open spaces that work perfectly well for a family photo. Some of my personal favourites include:

Ellenbrook Fields in Hatfield

Verulum Park in St Albans

Stanborough Lakes in Welwyn Garden City

Alban Way (Hatfield – Smallford section)

Seasons and backdrops

I love to get outdoors in Spring and Autumn. In Spring, you get the vibrant greens, pink blossoms and yellow daffodils as backdrops. In Autumn, the beautiful orange and yellow with the low sun. These are the times I tend to offer mini-sessions. Occasionally we offer them at Hitchin Lavender fields also.

What to wear for family photography sessions.

Firstly, comfort is important. If we are walking around an open space, we recommend appropriate footwear. I definitely recommend avoiding clothes with words or slogans on them. For a classic look, neutral and block colours work well. Think about the weather or environment on the day. If the background is lush and green, you don’t want to blend in by wearing greens and browns. Contrasting colours make you stand out from the background.

What to expect during your family photoshoot

I have a background in early years teaching so know that not all children feel comfortable immediately. I am a stranger to them with a big scary camera. My first suggestion is to get to know you and your child. This is without the camera. We would start with a little walk and chat. I might take some shots to see how your child reacts. We can create fun by playing hide and seek, peekaboo behind a tree and collecting natural treasures. Thes are the types of pictures where we don’t necessarily want the child looking directly at the camera and smiling. They are photojournalistic meaning I am capturing their fun, vibrant nature as they are busy doing what they love. Playing! Depending on how confident your child feels, we can introduce some more posed portraits.
