Sara is a Newborn Photography specialist based in a Hatfield Business Park studio.

Being a photographer means I am very good at hiding behind the camera. I thought I should introduce myself properly and let you know a little bit about me, what motivates me and what I love about what I do.

10 facts about Sara

#1 – I am the ultimate multi-tasker

Aside from being a photographer, I am a full-time Teacher of Nursery/Reception. I have done this for 22 years. I love the challenges that each day brings and the fact that no two days are the same. Being around small people makes me feel alive and forever young. In addition, I am a qualified Forest School Teacher so I love teaching outdoors too.

#2 – I lived overseas for 12 years.

I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to live in Jakarta Indonesia, ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (where I learnt to kitesurf) and Budapest, Hungary. The most amazing place I have visited was Antarctica where I took thousands of photos!

#3 I got my first camera when I was 9.

My uncle was a darkroom technician/photographer and my grandfather designed lenses. Photography was quite literally in my blood. I convinced my parents to convert our spare room into a dark room where I used to process my own black and white film and prints. After acing my Photography A level, I became a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society.

#4 I’m desperate to be a mum myself.

Being a teacher and newborn photographer means that I am constantly around children and babies. My own journey to motherhood is not proving easy but I always feel encouraged by some of the amazing families that we meet in our studio. Whether their journey to parenthood was easy or difficult, planned, unplanned, natural or assisted or via surrogate, everyone has such an amazing story to tell and I live in hope that one day it will be my own baby that I can create beautiful artwork of.

#5 Taking photos is the smallest part of my job

It’s the bit I enjoy the most, is taking the photos whilst chatting to new parents and finding out their stories. However, this is the smallest part of my job. Most of my time is taken up with marketing, phone calls, meeting other business owners, updating my website, collecting artwork from the printer, buying props, attending networking meetings, editing photos, preparing slideshows, answering emails, responding to messages, wrapping artwork, attending fairs and events, going to pregnancy classes to meet expectant mums, washing blankets, setting up our studio, and buying nappies.

#6 I have an unhealthy obsession with blankets

I can’t help it! Every time I am in a homeware store, I go straight to the bedding and blanket aisle and ask myself the question “Would a baby look good on that?” I recently had to clear out some of my lesser-used blankets to make room for all the new ones I bought!

#7 I get butterflies before each shoot

Even though I have been doing this for nearly 3 years, I still get nervous before a shoot. I want everything to be perfect for you and I want it to be the best experience you could ever have. However, the nerves soon disappear as soon as you pull into the carport and smile at me through your tired-newborn-parent eyes.

#8 I am terrified of rats

Not many things scare me. Living in Asia means that I was used to the odd snake or spider in the bath. But rats… even typing the word makes me shudder. My class at school know this and take great delight in taunting me about it. Yes! 4-year-olds can be so mean!!!! They love to drop rats into any conversation, draw me pictures of them, find pictures of them in books to show me and leave me toy ones on my desk.

#9 I am partial to a burger

Yes, I am that girl that no matter which restaurant I go to, I spend ages looking at the menu only to choose a burger – EVERY…SINGLE…TIME

#10 I am passionate about what I do

I never do anything by halves. If I feel passionate about something, I put my heart and soul into it and always do it to the best of my ability. I am not afraid of hard work, learn new skills and making mistakes in order to grow.
